As any prominent honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
